GovChat SASSA Application 2026

GovChat is a citizen to government messaging platform, launched in 2018, that once let South Africans apply for SASSA grants and check their application status through WhatsApp.

During the COVID period it handled millions of Social Relief of Distress (SRD) applications on behalf of SASSA and the Department of Social Development. Its situation has since changed.

GovChat was removed from WhatsApp in 2020 and is now largely inactive, so it is no longer a reliable way to apply for a grant or check your status. If you want to apply for the SRD R370 grant or track your application, you should use the official SASSA channels instead: the SRD website at srd.sassa.gov.za, the SASSA WhatsApp line, or the USSD code.

One more thing to keep in mind, SASSA does not offer loans, so you can ignore any message that offers a “SASSA loan.” Below we explain what GovChat is, what happened to it, and the exact official steps to apply and check your SASSA status in 2026.

What is GovChat?

GovChat is a messaging platform that was built to connect citizens directly with South African government departments. Through it, people could interact with government services, get information about social services, report service delivery problems to their ward councillor, and apply for SASSA grants. It could be used from both mobile phones and desktop computers.

At its peak, GovChat was one of the main ways ordinary South Africans reached government online. It worked closely with SASSA and the Department of Social Development, and it processed a very large volume of SRD grant applications during the pandemic when in person visits were not possible.

What happened to GovChat?

The important part of the story, and the reason this matters for your application, is what happened after 2020. GovChat ran on the WhatsApp Business platform. In July 2020, Meta (the owner of WhatsApp) notified GovChat that it was not complying with WhatsApp’s business terms, and GovChat was offboarded from the platform in November 2020.

GovChat took the matter to South Africa’s Competition Commission, which in 2022 referred Meta to the Competition Tribunal for abuse of dominance. That legal battle is still ongoing years later. In the meantime, the loss of its main channel left GovChat unable to raise further funding, and the company entered business rescue. In Competition Tribunal hearings in late 2025, GovChat’s own legal team described it as a dormant company that exists only on paper and no longer holds active records.

In short, GovChat is not the active, government backed grant portal it was during the pandemic. The website may still be online, but you should not rely on it to submit a new SASSA application or to get an accurate status result.

Can you still apply for SASSA grants on GovChat?

Given everything above, the honest answer is no, GovChat is no longer a dependable route for a SASSA application. Even if you find a GovChat page or app that mentions SASSA, the platform that once powered those applications has been inactive for years.

The good news is that you do not need GovChat at all. SASSA now runs its own official application and status system, and it is free, quick, and available directly to you. Use the official methods below.

How to apply for the SRD R370 grant (official method)

The SRD grant is R370 per month and has been extended by the government until 31 March 2027. Applications are handled online by SASSA, and there are three official ways to apply. You only need to use one of them. Submitting more than one application will not speed anything up.

Method 1: Apply on the official website

Step 1: Open your browser and go to srd.sassa.gov.za. Only use this official address.

Step 2: Click “Apply” and enter the cellphone number that is registered in your own name.

Step 3: SASSA sends a one time PIN (OTP) to that number. Enter the OTP to verify your identity.

Step 4: Read the declaration and consent, then enter your details exactly as they appear on your ID, including your 13 digit ID number, full name, and date of birth.

Step 5: Choose your payment method, either a bank account in your own name or cash collection at a retail store such as Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Boxer, or Checkers.

Step 6: Review everything and submit. Save the reference number you receive.

Method 2: Apply via WhatsApp

If the website is difficult to use, SASSA also offers a WhatsApp application service. Save the official SASSA SRD WhatsApp number, send a greeting to start, and follow the automated prompts. Always confirm the current WhatsApp number on srd.sassa.gov.za before you begin, so you are not misled by a fake number.

Method 3: Apply via USSD (no data needed)

If you do not have internet access, dial 1347737# from any phone. This works on basic phones and does not use data. Follow the on screen menu and have your ID number ready, because the session times out quickly.

For any help, you can also call the SASSA toll free line on 0800 60 10 11.

How to check your SASSA status

Once you have applied, remember that the SRD grant is reassessed every month. SASSA automatically checks your ID number against Home Affairs, UIF, SARS, NSFAS, and bank databases each month, so your result can change from one month to the next even if nothing else changes on your side.

To check your status, go to srd.sassa.gov.za, enter your ID number and the phone number you used when applying, and submit. Your latest status appears on screen, showing whether your application is pending, approved, declined, or referred for review. If your application is declined and you believe the decision is wrong, you can lodge an appeal through the official SRD appeals process within 90 days.

Since September 2025, SASSA also requires biometric verification for new applicants and for anyone updating their details, so make sure the details on your application match your ID exactly.

A note on SASSA and loans

Because a lot of misleading content uses SASSA’s name, it is worth being clear. SASSA does not give loans, and it does not partner with any loan provider. It only pays social grants, and it never asks you to repay money, pay a fee, or hand over your card or PIN. If you see an advert or message offering a “SASSA loan,” “SRD loan,” or a loan against your grant, treat it as a scam and do not share your details. You can report suspicious activity to SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.
