Who Qualifies for SASSA Disability Grant? New Criteria

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provides financial help to people who cannot cover their daily life expenses on their own. If you are living with a disability, you can also apply for a SASSA grant, as long as you fall under the eligibility criteria and provide authentic documents. Come with me and I will walk you through the updated 2026 criteria, how much the grant pays, and the documents you need for a disability grant.

What Is the SASSA Disability Grant?

The Disability Grant is a monthly payment from the government of South Africa for adults who live with a physical or mental disability that makes them unable to work. There are two types:

  • A temporary disability grant if your condition is expected to last between 6 and 12 months.
  • A permanent disability grant if your condition is expected to last longer than 12 months. Permanent does not mean it is for life, it simply means it continues for longer than a year and can still be reviewed by SASSA.

From 1 April 2026, the Disability Grant pays R2,400 per month, up from R2,315. The grant also works on a sliding scale, which means that people with higher private income receive a smaller grant amount, so having some income does not always mean you get nothing.

Importance Of Eligibility Criteria

The majority of people rush to apply for a bursary or a social grant program as soon as the government announces it, without checking the eligibility criteria first. Instead, we should always read the criteria before applying, so we can understand whether the grant is for us or whether we should look for another program. It saves you time and it saves you a declined application.

SASSA Disability Grant Eligibility Criteria

Here are the criteria you must meet to qualify for the Disability Grant:

  • You must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee.
  • You must be living in South Africa at the time of application.
  • You must be between 18 and 59 years of age.
  • You must have a medical or assessment report from a state-appointed doctor confirming a disability that makes you unable to work.
  • The medical report must be not older than 3 months at the date of application.
  • You must pass the SASSA means test on both income and assets:
    • The income threshold is R112,200 per year (R9,350 per month) if you are single, and R224,400 per year (R18,700 per month) if you are married.
    • The asset threshold is R1,584,000 if you are single, and R3,168,000 if you are married.
  • You must not already be receiving another social grant for yourself.

One thing to keep in mind: if you are admitted to an institution that has a contract with the state to care for you, your grant is not cancelled. Instead it is reduced to 25% of the maximum amount from the fourth month after your admission, and it is reinstated in full once you are discharged.

Note for married applicants: SASSA combines your income and assets with those of your spouse, whether you are married in community of property or out of it.

Required Documents

When you apply, make sure you bring the following:

  • Your 13-digit bar-coded ID document.
  • If you do not have an ID, you must complete an affidavit on the standard SASSA format in the presence of a Commissioner of Oaths who is not a SASSA official, and you must also bring a sworn statement signed by a reputable person, such as a councillor, traditional leader, social worker, minister of religion, or school principal, who can confirm your name and age.
  • A medical or assessment report on your disability issued by a state-appointed doctor, which must be not older than 3 months.
  • Proof of your marital status. If you are married, provide a Marriage Certificate. If you are divorced, provide a Divorce Decree. If your spouse has passed away, provide a Death Certificate.
  • Proof of residence.
  • Proof of income, and a bank statement covering the last 3 consecutive months.

A small tip that saves people a wasted trip: make certified copies of every document before you go, because SASSA offices do not make copies for you.

How to Apply

Application forms are not available online, so you complete the form at your nearest SASSA office in the presence of a SASSA officer, who can help you if you are unable to fill it in yourself. If you are too sick, old, or disabled to go in person, a family member or friend can apply on your behalf through a power of attorney. SASSA will then book you for a medical assessment, and once approved you are paid from the date you applied. The service is free.

What Is New in 2026

If your title question is “who qualifies,” the honest 2026 answer is that the medical and financial rules are the same in spirit, but SASSA has tightened how strictly it checks them. By the end of 2025, the agency had cross-checked millions of bank accounts and credit bureau records, flagged hundreds of thousands of grants for review, and cancelled tens of thousands that no longer qualified.

So if you receive an SMS or letter asking you to come in for a review, do not ignore it. Bring your ID, your latest bank statements, proof of income, and any recent medical reports, because ignoring a review notice is the fastest way to get a grant suspended.

Two more things worth knowing. If your application is declined, you have the right to appeal within 90 days of the rejection letter, and many people who are declined at first succeed on appeal by adding the medical evidence that was missing.

And when you turn 60, you no longer qualify for the Disability Grant, but you move over to the Older Persons Grant, which pays the same amount. If you also need full-time care from another person, you may qualify for the Grant-in-Aid on top of your Disability Grant.

The SASSA Disability Grant criteria are designed so the agency can help the people who need it most. The purpose of a firm set of rules is to filter out those who do not qualify and make sure the grant reaches those who genuinely cannot manage their daily expenses. I hope this information helps you, thank you.
