SASSA Approved With Payday But No SMS Solution

Are you among those waiting to receive the SMS because your SASSA status is approved with a payday, but no SMS for the payment date has arrived yet? There is no need to panic. This is not only happening to you. It is something many eligible people face every single month, and in most cases it does not mean anything is wrong.

Here is the most important thing to understand first. SASSA does not send payment SMS notifications to everyone at the same time. The messages go out in batches over several days. So your grant can already be approved and your payday can already be set, while your SMS is simply still sitting in the queue. Your approval is confirmed, the SMS just has not reached your phone yet.

The quick solution in this case is to check your SASSA status online and take a screenshot of the payday and status. You can use that screenshot as proof that your payment is approved. Whether you can collect without the SMS depends on your payment method, and we explain that in detail below.

Please note: The SRD grant amount is now R370 per month. It was increased from the old R350 amount in April 2024 and remains at R370 for the 2026/2027 year. If you still see “R350” on older pages, treat it as the old wording for the same grant.

Underlying Causes of Approved With Payday But No SMS

The problem can either be from SASSA’s side or from your side. Let us look at the main factors that lead to the no SMS issue.

  • SMS sent in batches (normal delay)
  • Incorrect personal details
  • Delay in application processing
  • Technical errors and network issues
  • Switching of payment methods
  • Banking details verification
  • Biometric identity verification not completed
  • Card change or collection point issues

SMS Sent In Batches

This is the most common reason and the one most people do not know about. SASSA processes millions of payments every month, so the payment SMS messages are released in batches across several days. Your status can show approved with a payday while the SMS is still queued behind thousands of others. This is normal and it does not mean your payment has been cancelled.

Incorrect Personal Details

This is another very common reason you have not received the SMS yet. If you entered incorrect details in your application form, there is a high chance that the SMS will not reach you. You may have entered the wrong phone number or the wrong email address. If you borrowed someone else’s number to apply, you also need access to that number to receive the message.

Delay In Application Processing

There is a high chance that there is simply a delay in the processing of your application from the agency’s side. This happens because of the high volume of applications that SASSA has to process within a short time. Due to this large amount of applications, your processing and your SMS can take some extra time.

Technical Errors

Technical errors usually occur when there are network issues. Due to a loss of network on the SASSA SMS gateway or on your mobile operator side, such as Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, or Telkom, your SMS might get lost or delayed in between. That is why you are not receiving it on time.

Switching Of Payment Methods

Changing your payment method too often is another common reason for a missing SMS. Every time you switch your method, for example from a bank account to cash send, or to a Postbank account, SASSA has to verify the new details again. While that verification is pending, your SMS can be delayed.

Banking Details

If you changed or updated your bank account but did not keep SASSA aware of it, there can be confusion between the information you provided before and your current banking details. SASSA continuously verifies your banking information, so a mismatch can delay both your SMS and your payment. Always keep your banking details on your SASSA profile correct and up to date.

Biometric Identity Verification Not Completed

Since 2024, SASSA introduced a biometric or facial verification step for some beneficiaries, especially those who want to change their mobile number or banking details, or those flagged for identity confirmation. SASSA sends an SMS with a link to complete this step. If you have not completed it, your payment can stay on hold even though your status shows approved. Check your registered number and the SASSA portal for any verification request.

Card And Collection Point Changes

The old SASSA Gold Card is being replaced by the Postbank Black Card, with a final swap deadline of 31 August 2026. If you have not swapped your card, or if your collection point has changed, you may face a delay in collecting even after approval. Make sure your card is active and swapped before the deadline.

Can You Withdraw Without The SMS?

This is the question most people really want answered. The honest answer is that it depends on your payment method. Do not simply go to any ATM and expect to withdraw, because it does not work the same way for everyone.

Payment MethodCan You Collect Without The SMS?What To Do
Bank account (in your own name)YesOnce your status shows approved with a payday, you can withdraw at an ATM using your bank card. Keep a screenshot of your approved status as backup.
Cash sendNoYou must wait for the SMS that contains your voucher or collection code.
Postbank Black CardYes, once card is activeUse your Black Card at an ATM or till point. Make sure you have swapped from the old Gold Card.
Pick n Pay or BoxerNoYou must wait for the SMS before collecting at the retail till.

So if your payment method is a bank account or an active Postbank Black Card, you do not have to wait for the SMS. If your method is cash send, Pick n Pay, or Boxer, then the SMS with your code is required before you can collect.

What Actions Can You Take When You Do Not Receive The SMS?

  1. Wait a day or two after your payday. Because the SMS is sent in batches, it often arrives on its own within this time.
  2. Check your status on the official SASSA website at srd.sassa.gov.za and confirm it still shows approved for the current month.
  3. Take a clear screenshot showing your ID, the word “Approved”, the payday, and the date.
  4. Confirm that your registered phone number and email on your SASSA profile are correct and active.
  5. Check if SASSA has asked you to complete an identity or biometric verification link.
  6. If your money is paid to a bank account and nothing has arrived, call your bank first to confirm there is no issue on their side.
  7. If the problem is still not solved, call the SASSA helpline on 0800 60 10 11 and explain your situation with your ID number ready.
  8. You can also email SASSA at GrantsEnquiries@sassa.gov.za or visit your nearest SASSA office in person.

How Long Does The SASSA SMS Take?

In most cases the SMS follows within 48 hours of your payment being approved. During busy periods, such as month end or just after public holidays, it can take longer, sometimes up to about two weeks. So if you are only a day or two past your payday, there is no reason to worry yet. Keep checking your status online during this time instead of relying on the SMS alone.
