SASSA Status Pending and how long does Pending take to fix?

Many people check their SASSA (South African Social Security Agency) status and find it stuck on Pending.

Here is the short answer first. A Pending status means SASSA has received your SRD R370 application and is still verifying your details against government databases like Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, NSFAS and your bank. No final decision, approved or declined, has been made yet, so there is no reason to panic.

Most pending statuses clear on their own, usually within a few days to two weeks, and SASSA aims to finish its checks within 90 days at the outside. Pending is the most common status beneficiaries see, especially in the first week of a new month when millions of applications are processed at once.

Below we explain why it happens, how long it really takes, and the steps that actually help.

What Does “SASSA Status Pending” Mean?

Before any SRD grant is paid, SASSA has to confirm two things: that you qualify for the grant, and that the details you gave, such as your ID, phone number and banking information, are correct. To do this it cross-checks your information every month against several official databases. While those checks are running, your status shows as Pending. It simply means your application is still awaiting a final result, not that it has been approved or denied.

According to SASSA’s official status guide on srd.sassa.gov.za, a monthly pending result, for example “April Pending”, means your application for that period was received successfully and verification is still in progress. The advice is to check back later in the month for an update.

You may also see more specific versions of a pending status:

  • Bank details pending: Your application was received but SASSA has no banking details or payment preference for you. You need to submit your banking details on the portal.
  • Reapplication pending: No reapplication has been received for that period. You need to submit one on the portal.
  • Month pending: Your reapplication was received and verification for that month is still underway.

Why Is My SASSA Status Still Pending?

A pending status can happen for a few reasons, depending on your situation. Here are the most common ones:

  • High application volume: SASSA processes millions of SRD applications every month. At the start of a new month, or just after a public holiday, the system handles a huge spike in checks, which can slow things down.
  • Verification in progress: Your details are being matched against Home Affairs (DHA), SARS, UIF, NSFAS and your bank. Until all of these checks finish, your status stays pending.
  • Details mismatch or missing information: A small error, such as a typo in your name or ID number, or banking details that do not match your ID, can hold up verification.
  • Monthly reassessment: SASSA re-runs its checks every month. This is why a status that was approved before can move back to pending in a new month, even if nothing has changed on your side.

Because your circumstances are checked against so many databases at once, pending can last a while, especially early in the month. In most cases it clears on its own without you doing anything.

Fix Why Your SASSA R370 Is Still Pending

If your status has been pending longer than you expected, these are the steps that actually help:

  • Check and correct your details: Most avoidable delays come from a small mismatch. Log in to the official portal at srd.sassa.gov.za and make sure your name, ID number and banking details are correct, complete, and in your own name.
  • Confirm the exact month that is pending: SRD is verified month by month, so check which period is showing pending and only fix issues that apply to that month. Avoid making repeated unnecessary changes, since each edit can trigger a fresh round of checks.
  • Reach SASSA directly if it drags on: You can message the official WhatsApp line on 082 046 8553 by sending “Hi” and following the prompts, or call the toll-free number 0800601011, open Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm. Have your ID and registered phone number ready.
  • Visit a SASSA office for ID or OTP problems: If your identity could not be verified, or you have lost access to the phone number linked to your application, take your original ID to your nearest SASSA office. These issues usually cannot be fixed online.
  • Wait out the verification: If your details are already correct, pending often just needs time. Checking every few days is enough. Checking many times a day will not make it move faster.

A quick safety note. Only ever check or update your SRD grant on the official site, srd.sassa.gov.za, and on the official WhatsApp number above. SASSA will never ask you to pay a fee or to share your PIN, password or OTP to release a grant. Any message or website asking for that is a scam.

How Long Does SASSA Pending Take?

A pending status does not have a single fixed length. It depends on the checks SASSA still needs to complete and how many applications are in the queue. In most cases it clears within a few days to two weeks. During busy periods, usually the first week of a new month, it can take longer. By law SASSA aims to finalise verification within 90 days, which is about three months, although the large majority are resolved well before that.

If your status has stayed on pending for more than three weeks, it is worth updating your details on the portal to trigger a fresh check, or contacting SASSA directly to ask what is still outstanding.

Once your application is approved, the SRD grant does not have a fixed payday. Your payment date appears next to your status for that month, and the money usually reflects within one to three working days of being released.

Can I Speed Up the Pending Status Process?

You cannot force SASSA to approve your application faster, but you can avoid unnecessary delays by making sure your application is as complete and accurate as possible, and by not editing your details repeatedly once they are correct.

How Long Does the Pending Status Usually Last?

It varies with the volume of applications and the checks still to be completed. Most clear within two weeks, and SASSA aims to finalise within 90 days. Checking for updates every few days is a good idea.

What Should I Do if My Application Is Declined After Being Pending?

A pending status can end in either approval or a decline. If you are declined and you believe it is wrong, you can request a reconsideration on srd.sassa.gov.za within 30 days of the decision. If that reconsideration is also unsuccessful, you can take the matter further with a formal appeal.

Will a Pending Status Affect My Chances of Approval?

No. A pending status does not count against you. It only means your application is still being reviewed. The final decision depends on whether you meet the eligibility rules, not on how long you spent in pending.
