Moya App SASSA Download for R370 Appeal or Banking Details

Yes, you can use the Moya app for SASSA. You can check your SRD R370 status, open the appeal portal, and start a banking details update, all without spending a cent on data. But it does not work the way most people think. MoyaApp does not run its own SASSA system. It simply opens the official SASSA website inside the app, free of data charges, on MTN, Vodacom, Telkom and Cell C in South Africa.

To check your status, open MoyaApp, tap Discover, go to Services, and open the SASSA SRD option. The official SRD page loads inside the app. Enter your 13 digit South African ID number and the cellphone number you used when you applied, then tap the status button. Your result appears month by month as Approved, Pending, Declined, or a verification message.

The rest of this guide covers how to install the app safely, what your status result means, how to appeal, how to change your banking details, and what Moya cannot do for you.

What the Moya App Actually Is

Moya is a datafree app built by a private company, Moya App (Pty) Ltd. It is not a SASSA app, it is not built by SASSA, and it does not decide anything about your grant. The app itself says this in its store listing, where it states plainly that it is a private, independent platform with no affiliation to any government entity, including SASSA.

So what does it do? Think of it as a free browser that opens certain websites without charging you data. SASSA’s SRD website is one of those websites. When you tap SASSA SRD inside Moya, you leave Moya’s world and land on the real srd.sassa.gov.za page, just without paying for the data.

That distinction matters, because it means two things at once. Moya is completely safe to use as a doorway, since the page you type your ID into is the official SASSA page. And Moya cannot help you with anything SASSA does, because it never touches your application.

How To Download the Moya App Safely

Do not download Moya as an APK file from a random website, and do not trust any download button that promises the app outside of the official stores. Fake SASSA apps are one of the most common scams targeting grant beneficiaries in South Africa, and a sideloaded file is exactly how those scams reach your phone.

There are only two safe places to get it.

Android: Get it from the official MoyaApp listing on Google Play. Check that the developer is listed as Datafree Africa before you tap Install. If you would rather not follow a link, open the Play Store yourself and search for MoyaApp.

iPhone: Get it from the official Moya App #Datafree listing on the App Store. Check that the developer is Moya App (Pty) Ltd before you tap Get.

Whichever route you take, check the developer name. That one check is what separates the real app from a clone.

The download itself uses data or Wi-Fi. Only once the app is installed do the datafree services kick in, so if you are completely out of data, ask a friend to let you install it on their Wi-Fi first.

Datafree Only Works Under These Conditions

This is the part almost every guide leaves out, and it is why some people think the app is broken.

Datafree access works only in South Africa, and only on MTN, Vodacom, Telkom and Cell C. If you are on another network or outside the country, the app still works, but you will be paying normal data charges.

You also need to keep mobile data switched on. The datafree routing needs an active mobile connection to work. Nothing gets deducted from your bundle for supported services, but the data toggle has to be on. If you turn mobile data off completely, or you are on Wi-Fi, the datafree pathway does not apply.

Voice calls, video calls, photos and video attachments inside Moya are not datafree. The app warns you before those actions.

What You Need Before You Start

Have these two things ready and the whole process takes under two minutes.

Your 13 digit South African ID number, exactly as it appears on your ID, with no spaces or dashes.

The cellphone number you used when you applied for the SRD grant. If you no longer use that number, nothing on the SASSA page will work for you, and you must update your number with SASSA before anything else.

Moya App SASSA Status Check

Here are the steps, start to finish.

Step 1: Open MoyaApp and register with your South African cellphone number if you have not already. The app sends you an OTP by SMS. Enter it and your account is active. There is no username to remember.

Step 2: On the home screen, tap Discover.

Step 3: Go to the Services section and look for the SASSA SRD option. Depending on your app version it may be labelled SASSA SRD, SRD Zero Rated, or simply SASSA.

Step 4: Tap it. The official SASSA SRD website loads inside a datafree window.

Step 5: Enter your 13 digit ID number and your registered cellphone number.

Step 6: Tap the status button. Your result appears for the current month and for previous months.

Everything from Step 4 onwards is happening on SASSA’s official SRD website, not on Moya. So if the page is slow at month end, that is SASSA’s server under load, not the app.

Moya App SASSA Appeal

If your application was declined, you can appeal. But be clear on what is happening here. Moya does not process the appeal and does not influence it. It gives you datafree access to the appeals portal, and that is all.

Your appeal is not even decided by SASSA. It goes to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals, known as ITSAA, which is a separate body that reviews the decision independently.

Step 1: Open MoyaApp, tap Discover, and open the SASSA SRD service.

Step 2: On the SASSA page, go to the appeals section, or open the official SASSA appeals portal directly from within the app.

Step 3: Enter your ID number and your registered cellphone number, then request a PIN.

Step 4: Enter the OTP that arrives by SMS.

Step 5: Select the month you are appealing and give your reason. Attach supporting proof if you have it, such as a bank statement explaining a flagged deposit or a letter confirming you are not receiving UIF.

Step 6: Submit and save your reference number.

Three rules worth knowing before you start. You have 90 days from the date of the decline to lodge an appeal, and SASSA recommends you do it within 30. You must lodge a separate appeal for every declined month, because one appeal covers one month only. And ITSAA usually takes 60 to 90 days to reach a decision, so a pending appeal after a few weeks is normal, not a problem.

Moya App SASSA Change Banking Details

Wrong banking details are one of the most common reasons an approved beneficiary sees no money. If the account is not active, or it is not in your own name, the payment simply bounces back to SASSA. It does not get your grant cancelled, but it does delay it, sometimes by weeks.

You can start the update inside Moya, but the process runs entirely on SASSA’s own system and it has changed. There is now a mandatory identity check.

Step 1: Open MoyaApp, tap Discover, and open the SASSA SRD service.

Step 2: On the SASSA page, find the banking details update section, or open the official SASSA banking details update page directly from within the app.

Step 3: Enter your 13 digit ID number and submit. Check every digit, because one wrong number stops the process.

Step 4: SASSA sends an OTP to the cellphone number you registered with. Enter it.

Step 5: A “Bank Details Update” screen appears. Tap Verify Identity. This step is compulsory and you cannot skip it.

Step 6: Complete the live face scan. Allow camera access, sit in good light, look straight at the camera, and keep your face uncovered. If the scan fails repeatedly, the problem is usually a mismatch with your Home Affairs record.

Step 7: Once verified, choose your payment method and enter your new account number, branch code and account type.

Step 8: Review everything on screen and submit.

Now the important part that most guides get wrong. You will not get an instant SMS confirming the change. Your new details go to the bank for verification first, and only after that verification passes will they be used, and only for future payments. Nothing is backdated. If you submit the change late in the month, expect it to apply from the next payment cycle.

Two rules SASSA will not bend on. The bank account must belong to you, in the same name as your ID, because SASSA cannot pay your grant into somebody else’s account. And if you choose the money transfer option, the cellphone number must be registered in your own name.

What the Moya App Cannot Do

This is where most people get frustrated, so let me be direct.

Moya cannot check your SASSA card balance. For that, dial 1203210# from your registered number, use an ATM with your card, or ask at the till at Shoprite, Boxer, Checkers or Pick n Pay.

Moya cannot pay you, speed up your payment, or release money that is stuck.

Moya cannot fix a declined status, override the R624 income check, or argue your case. Only an appeal to ITSAA can do that.

Moya cannot help you if the phone number on your SASSA application is dead, because every step depends on an OTP going to that number.

And Moya has no SASSA support desk. If something is wrong with your grant, you contact SASSA, not Moya.

Using Moya Safely

Because Moya is a messaging app first, it stays logged in. On a shared or borrowed phone, that means the next person can open Discover and reach whatever you left open. Log out when you are done, and never let anyone else complete your OTP or your face scan for you.

Keep these three rules in mind and you will not get caught by a scam.

Only ever type your ID number into a page whose address starts with srd.sassa.gov.za. If the address looks different, close it.

Nobody can charge you for a status check, an appeal, or a banking update. All three are free. Anyone asking for payment is running a scam.

SASSA will never ask you for your card PIN, your banking password, or your OTP. Not by SMS, not by WhatsApp, not by phone.

If Moya Is Not Working

The app is a convenience, not the only route. If Discover will not load or the SASSA page keeps timing out at month end, use one of these instead.

Go to srd.sassa.gov.za in any browser. The SASSA site is the same one Moya opens for you.

Message SASSA on WhatsApp at 082 046 8553.

Dial 12069277# from your registered number. USSD needs no data at all and works on a basic phone.

Call the SASSA toll free line on 0800 60 10 11, open on weekdays.

The Moya app has made life a lot easier for millions of SRD applicants by removing the data cost from something they need to do every single month. Just remember what it really is. It is a free doorway to SASSA, not SASSA itself. Use it for what it is good at, know where its limits are, and you will save yourself both money and frustration.
