Here is how much must You Earn to Qualify for a SASSA Grant

SASSA has been supporting underprivileged South African citizens financially for many years, but only those who meet the income and asset limits will actually receive a grant. So how much must you earn to qualify for a SASSA grant?

The short answer is that it depends on the grant you apply for. The full breakdown for every grant is below.

Applicant’s Income Eligibility for All SASSA Grants (2026)

  • If you are applying for an SRD grant, then your income must not be above R624 per month. SASSA rechecks this every single month against bank, SARS, UIF and NSFAS records, so even one deposit that pushes you over R624 can affect your payment.
  • For the Child Support grant, the income of the primary caregiver must not be more than R5,800 per month (R69,600 per year) if single, or R11,600 per month (R139,200 per year) if married.
  • For a Care Dependency grant, the caregiver’s income must not be more than R23,100 per month (R277,200 per year) if single, or R46,200 per month (R554,400 per year) if married. For this grant, only the caregiver’s income is tested, not assets.
  • Any citizen earning less than about R8,990 per month (R107,880 per year) is eligible for a Disability grant if single. For married applicants, the combined income limit for the same grant is about R17,980 per month (R215,760 per year).
  • The Older Persons’ grant and War Veterans grant use exactly the same limits as the Disability grant, about R8,990 per month (R107,880 per year) if single and R17,980 per month (R215,760 per year) if married. These three grants are paid on a sliding scale, which means the more private income you have, the smaller your grant will be, rather than being cut off completely the moment you earn a little.
  • Please note that Grant-in-Aid is not a separate grant with its own income limit. It is an extra amount paid on top of your Older Persons, Disability or War Veterans grant when you need full-time care from another person, so you qualify for it by already qualifying for one of those grants.
  • However, there is no income threshold for a Foster Child grant. It is the only SASSA grant with no means test at all.

Income is only part of the test. For the Older Persons, Disability and War Veterans grants, SASSA also verifies your assets to keep the grants transparent and credible. A single applicant must not own assets worth more than R1,524,600, and a married couple must not own more than R3,049,200 combined.

The home you live in and your basic household goods are not counted. If you are married, SASSA combines your income and assets with your spouse’s, whether you are married in or out of community of property. If your spouse already receives a grant, that grant does not count as income in your application.

Keep in mind that these amounts are the figures in effect from 1 April 2026. SASSA reviews them every year, usually in April and sometimes again in October, so it is worth confirming the latest limits on the official SASSA website before you apply.

The goal of SASSA is to provide financial relief to as many citizens as possible while sticking to these rules. Every South African can apply for a grant, but only those who fall within the income and asset limits will actually receive payment. In many cases applications are turned down simply because the applicant earns more than the maximum income the government allows for SASSA grants.

All those who need help working out how much they must earn to qualify for a SASSA grant can use this guide. We have listed the maximum income for each grant above, so if you want to qualify, make sure you fall within the income eligibility criteria before you apply. And remember to declare all your income honestly, since SASSA verifies it against bank and government records. Thank you.
