SASSA Disability Grant Online Application, Form & its Amount

Yes, you can apply for the SASSA disability grant online, but not in the way most websites describe it. There is no page where you simply log in, fill a form, and submit. The disability grant depends on a medical assessment, so the online process happens in two parts.

First, you book your medical assessment on the SASSA website. You go to sassa.gov.za, open the Disability Grant page, and click the link to make a medical assessment appointment. You choose your clinic or hospital, your date, and your time, and you confirm with an OTP sent to your phone.

Second, after the assessment has been done, you complete and submit your application online and upload your documents. SASSA requires that every document you upload is certified and valid within six months.

If you do not have internet access, none of this is a problem. You can go to your nearest SASSA office and do the whole thing there, including the booking. The service is free either way.

What the Disability Grant Is

The disability grant is a monthly payment from the South African Social Security Agency for adults who cannot work because of a physical or mental disability. The disability must be expected to keep you out of work for longer than six months.

It is not a grant for a short illness or an injury you will recover from in a few weeks. It is for people whose condition genuinely blocks them from earning a living, and who do not have the income or assets to support themselves.

There are two versions of the grant. If your condition is expected to last between six and twelve months, you get a temporary disability grant. If it is expected to last longer than twelve months, you get a permanent disability grant. Permanent does not mean you get it for life. It only means it runs for longer than twelve months, and SASSA can still call you in for a review.

Amount of the Disability Grant

The disability grant pays a maximum of R2 400 per month. This amount took effect from 1 April 2026, when it was increased by R80 from R2 320.

Notice the word maximum. This is the part almost every article gets wrong. The disability grant works on a sliding scale. R2 400 is what you receive if you have no other income at all. If you earn something, even a small amount, SASSA calculates a reduced grant based on your income. You do not automatically get R2 400 just because you are approved.

If you need another person to take care of you full time, you may also qualify for the Grant-in-Aid, which pays an extra R580 per month on top of your disability grant. It is not a standalone grant. You have to already be receiving the disability grant to get it, and you apply for it separately at a SASSA office with a fresh medical assessment. Many people who qualify never claim it.

Eligibility Criteria for the Disability Grant

SASSA does not approve every disabled applicant. You need to meet all of the following.

You must be a South African citizen, a permanent resident, or a refugee, and you must be living in South Africa at the time you apply.

You must be between 18 and 59 years of age. If you are under 18 and need permanent care, your caregiver should apply for the Care Dependency Grant instead. If you are 60 or older, you apply for the Older Persons Grant, which does not need a medical assessment.

You must have a physical or mental disability, confirmed by a medical assessment, that makes you unfit to work for longer than six months. A temporary injury that heals does not count.

You must not already be receiving another social grant in your own name. The Grant-in-Aid is the exception, because it is an add-on rather than a separate grant.

You must not be maintained or cared for in a state institution. If you are admitted to an institution that has a contract with the state to care for you, your grant is reduced to 25 percent of the maximum from the fourth month after admission. It is restored in full from the day you are discharged.

You and your spouse must pass the means test.

The Means Test Explained

The means test is where SASSA looks at your money, not your medical condition. It checks two separate things, your income and your assets, and you have to pass both.

From 1 April 2026, the income and asset limits for the disability grant are the same as the older persons grant:

If you are single, your income must not be more than R9 350 per month, which is R112 200 per year. Your assets must not be worth more than R1 584 000.

If you are married, your combined income must not be more than R18 700 per month, which is R224 400 per year. Your combined assets must not be worth more than R3 168 000.

Your primary home and your basic household goods are not counted as assets. Your spouse’s income counts whether you are married in community of property or out of it. If your spouse already receives a social grant, that grant is not counted as income against you.

One thing to be aware of. Some government pages still display older threshold figures that have not been refreshed since the April 2026 increase. If you see a lower number somewhere, ask the SASSA officer to confirm your position against the current thresholds when you apply.

Documents You Need

Get these together before you start, because a missing document is the fastest way to lose a day.

Your 13 digit bar coded ID. If you are married, your spouse’s ID as well. If you are a refugee, your refugee status permit and 13 digit refugee ID.

• Your medical report and functional assessment report confirming your disability. This must not be older than three months at the date of application.
• A referral form completed, signed, and stamped by the healthcare facility or practitioner treating you.
• Proof of marital status and proof of residence.
• Proof of income or dividends, and your spouse’s payslip if they are working.
• Proof of assets, including the municipal value of any property you own.
• Proof of a private pension, if you have one.
• Your bank statements for the past three months.
• Your UIF document, known as the blue book, or a discharge certificate from your previous employer if you were working.
• If your spouse died within the last five years, a copy of the will and the first and final liquidation and distribution accounts.
• If you are uploading these online, every document must be certified and valid within six months. Certification is free at any police station.

If you do not have an ID at all, you can still apply. You complete an affidavit on the standard SASSA format in front of a Commissioner of Oaths who is not a SASSA official, bring a sworn statement from a reputable person such as a councillor, traditional leader, social worker, minister of religion, or school principal who can verify your name and age, and let the SASSA official take your fingerprints. You will be sent to Home Affairs to apply for the ID while your application is processed. If you never get the ID, your grant will be suspended.

The Medical Assessment

This is the step that decides your application, so treat it seriously.

The assessment is done by a doctor appointed by the state, not by your own GP. That doctor is meeting you for the first time, and they are not assessing your diagnosis on its own. They are assessing whether your condition stops you from working, and for how long. Their recommendation is what SASSA uses to decide whether your grant is temporary or permanent.

Bring everything. Previous medical records, hospital letters, specialist reports, scan results, prescriptions, discharge summaries. Do not walk in with only a single doctor’s letter and expect it to carry your case. The assessment report is valid for three months from the date you are assessed, so do not let it go stale before you submit.

The assessment itself costs you nothing.

Disability Grant Online Application: Step by Step

Book your medical assessment. Go to sassa.gov.za, open the Disability Grant page, and click the link to make a medical assessment appointment. Enter your details, receive the OTP on your phone, and choose your preferred facility, date, and time. You will get an SMS confirming the booking. You can also cancel and rebook if something comes up, and SASSA asks that you cancel at least three days before your appointment.

Download your forms. The medical assessment referral form is available from the SASSA services portal. Have your treating doctor or clinic complete and stamp it.

Attend the assessment. Take your ID and all your medical records with you.

Complete the application online. After the assessment has been done, you can finish and submit the application on the SASSA services portal. If you are not already registered there, register a new account with your ID number, which becomes your username, and confirm with the OTP sent to your phone.

Upload your documents. All of them certified, all of them valid within six months, all in the format the portal asks for.

Submit and keep your reference. You will receive an application ID. Keep it. It is your proof that you applied and the reference you will use to check your status.

Applying at a SASSA Office

If you do not have internet access, or the online system gives you trouble, go to your nearest SASSA office. SASSA has said clearly that the online platform is not meant to stop anyone from applying in person.

Ask at the help desk for the disability grant application form. You must complete it in the presence of a SASSA officer, and you can ask them for help with any part of it. Hand over your documents with the completed form. The officer will give you a stamped, dated receipt with their name on it. Keep that receipt safe. It is your only proof of application.

If you are too ill or too physically limited to travel to the office, a family member or friend can apply for you. They will need a letter from you authorising them, and SASSA will register them as your procurator.

How Long It Takes and What You Get Paid

SASSA takes up to three months to process a disability grant application.

If you are approved, you are paid from the day you applied, not the day you were approved. That means your first payment includes back pay for the waiting months. This is worth knowing, because a lot of people assume the waiting period is money lost.

If your application is not approved, SASSA must tell you in writing and must give you the reason.

After You Are Approved

Three things matter immediately once your grant is running.

Your payment date. SASSA pays grants across the first few days of the month in a fixed order. Older persons are paid first, disability beneficiaries second, and children’s grants third. In most months this means disability is paid on the 3rd. In July 2026, for example, disability grants were paid on 3 July. If a date falls on a weekend or a public holiday, the payment shifts.

Your card, if you use Postbank. If your grant is paid onto the old gold SASSA card, you need to swap it for the new Postbank black card before 31 August 2026. After that date the gold cards stop working and you will not be able to access your money with one. The swap is free, takes no forms, and needs only your South African ID. You can collect the black card at Postbank points inside Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer, and SPAR, in any province, no matter where your grant was approved. Your balance transfers across automatically. Postbank has said the deadline will not be extended.

Reviews. SASSA reviews grants to confirm you still qualify, and it has become much stricter about this. If SASSA sends you a review notice by SMS or letter, do not ignore it. You are given time to respond, but repeated non-response leads to suspension and eventually cancellation. SASSA has also introduced a fourth payment day for beneficiaries who are due for a review or eLife certification, so if your money arrives a day later than usual, check your phone. That is usually the signal that you need to go to the office.

You are also legally required to tell SASSA yourself if your circumstances change, including your income, your marital status, your address, and your phone number.

If Your Application Is Declined

You have the right to appeal. Write to the Minister of Social Development explaining why you disagree, and submit it within 90 days of being told the outcome. You lodge it through your SASSA office.

Attach whatever was missing the first time. Most declines on medical grounds are lost because the file was thin, not because the person was not disabled. Updated medical reports, specialist referrals, and hospital records are what change the outcome on appeal. If your appeal succeeds, the grant can be reinstated with back pay.

If you are declined because your temporary grant expired, that is a different situation. You reapply, with a fresh medical assessment. Start that process well before your grant lapses so you do not sit with a gap in payments.

A Word on Scams

Applying for the disability grant is free. Booking the medical assessment is free. Swapping your Postbank card is free. Nobody at SASSA or Postbank will ever ask you for a fee, your PIN, or an OTP.

If someone offers to speed up your application for money, walk away. If a card is not clearly branded Postbank on the front, or if you are asked to complete forms to make it work, it is not a real Postbank black card.
